Based on a concept developed by Cyklop, fully automatic strapping through the eye of cold rolled strip coils has already been applied successfully for several years. Uncomfortable work with hand tools, requiring 2th man per shift, is not necessary anymore. In order to avoid damages and marks on surfaces steel strapping requires the sealing within the coil eye.
Industries such as automotive, consumer and packaging acquire their base material in coils from the steel industry. The heavy coils weigh 10 to 24 tons, in exceptional cases so-called jumbo coils weigh up to 42 tons. The number of coils which have to be secured, varies. They are in the range of 2 to 3 coils double-refined steel per hour up to 60 coils in a tandem line.
5 strappings with steel strap through the eye force the coil together and avoid "pipe formation". The sealing of both strapping ends is within the coil eye where it does not cause any problems. Furthermore edge protectors avoid damages on edges and surfaces during transportation. Circumferential strapping forces the sheet to keep the required shape. Under unfavourable conditions the edges of the sheets don’t remain in a plane surface but in the form of stairs – the so-called pipe formation. Strapping through the eye avoids this effect.
